WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?

Happy Lately

(story submitted anonymously, by a Chestist)

I've been so happy lately, everything feels good like I'm finally on my way.  My best-friend is not happy and is going through a really hard time.  The difference in how we are feeling is making it hard to be close.  We always share everything and now we're both holding back.  {end story}

When the playing field seems unlevel – for whatever combination of reasons – it can really stress a relationship.  This ever happen with you?

    In my story, I play the role of your friend. Things have been hard lately and I have a lot of worries. My oldest friend plays the role of you and everything is coming up roses. I get it — it can be hard to connect to feel the joy and or the empathy. I try and remember when it’s about her it’s about her and not me. I also try and remember the fine line between my complaining and my sharing.

    I have a fortunate life. Career, family, friends, relationships. My brother hasn’t. I’ve never been able to share with him because I always think he’ll think I’m trying to make him feel badly about how different things are between us. Actually, I know that’s what he’ll think. Our relationship is only superficial because of it.

    Have you talked with her (or him) about it?

      That’s exactly what I thought. Just put it out there.
      “I know you’re having a hard time so I feel kind of guilty talking about how well things are going for for me. Does it bother you? Should I share what’s going on with other people instead of you?”
      It’s always a mistake, IMHO, to be faux with good friends.

    It’s be great if we all felt the same all the time. That’s not so likely. Friends need to be able to share in each other’s joys and sadnesses. That is what friends do.

    Give yourself permission to celebrate how well things are going for you!
