WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?

So Ugly

Quick…if you had to pick one, would you rather think you look good or have others think you look good?  This reader writes us with a (very) short story about how she feels.

I just feel soooooooo ugly.  Whenever anyone says "you look beautiful", i just can not accept it. {end story}

Can you accept the compliments of others?  How about their criticisms – or just the observations that are less than flattering.  You know, like that blouse maybe doesn't go so well with your complexion?  Why do you think so many of us are quick to take critique as gospel and compliment as false?  Hmmm.  Let's #discuss.

    Beauty and its opposite live in our minds first and foremost. Nothing matters more than how you feel about how you look, and whether you are at peace with it.

    If I get a compliment I brush it off as if it is empty flattery. If I get a critique or as you put it an “observation” that feels like a judgment, I freak and carry it with me.

      Me too. I still vividly remember some of the things people have said to me about how I looked or what i was wearing in the past – with no intention of being mean or hurtful – that for whatever reason have stuck with me. They’re like ego-bruises that never fade.

    I definitely choose to think I look good… I don’t trust what people say to me and I don’t like their taste

    Wish I didn’t care about what I look like, but I do.
    Sigh….
    So hard not to when we are barraged with images of perfect-looking women.
    at least it’s not bathing suit season!
